What’s Your Impact Going To Be?

I glanced at Facebook this morning and I saw a picture posted by a former colleague and friend from Singapore. The picture was of himself and another woman we had worked with, with huge smiles on their faces. Comments started kicking in of the great memories and the friends we were able to make all around the world. From that, it now appears a reunion is in the works.

I live in the States and I haven’t seen my friend in person from Singapore in years as well as others living globally for the obvious reason of traveling logistics. But on this one morning, I felt like I still had the support and friendship of every one of them. I cannot say work had always been a bed of roses. We worked extremely hard to create a dynamic group, while offering the best services we knew how. What we were also creating was a family. We had our good days and bad days like anyone else. But we were the type of family that took care of its own, both in and out of the office.

A number of us have moved on from the firm. For many, it was the result of a series of layoffs. For others, it was no longer wanting to stay on after watching the culture shift from what it had been years prior.

Together Again
In any event, time heals all (or at least a good chunk of it) as they say. We no longer work side-by-side, but this morning, for me in my mind’s eye, we were all together again. We were problem solving. We were reaching out of our comfort zone to try new things. We were traveling to distant lands, learning about new cultures and becoming lifelong friends.

Still In My Corner
I am on the cusp of publishing a book. As much as I love to write, it can often be a lonely endeavor. And launching can be exciting, but scary as hell. With that one picture that was posted today, unbeknown to many of my former co-workers, they were all still standing in my corner. They were here to help me problem solve and were continuing to encourage me to step WAY out of my comfort zone with this book launch.

Make An Impact
As you go through your day, imagine the impact you could make on other people’s lives: that cup of coffee you could buy out of nowhere for a co-worker who’s had a tough morning, taking a break from your smart phone to offer a few words of encouragement to your child, or helping the mom who’s trying to get her groceries and her baby into the car at the same time.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” – Leo Buscaglia

Today, a friend from the other side of the world posted a picture and look how wonderful my morning has unfolded.

“May your adventures bring you closer together, even as they take you far away from home.” – Trenton Lee Stewart
