Last week I was driving in the car with my son. A song came on the radio and he looked at me and said, “Hey Mom that sounds like you singing.” I looked back at him and said, “Yeah, I guess it kind of does.” Then he asked me when was the last time that I wrote a song or sang? He thought it had been awhile since he had heard anything. I glanced over and I said, “Well to be honest honey, it seems like life keeps getting in the way.” I then proceeded to rattle off a number of excuses. I looked over at him and he was looking at me kind of funny. I then realized he knew more than I did. In that one look he was saying to me how could you not do what you love and how could you let anything get in the way of that? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Shouldn’t you do what you love and then everything else comes second? Smart kid! And to think he didn’t even have to say a word out loud to relay that message!
I love to sing, especially around the holidays and after that non-verbal chat with my son, I made the decision to write a new Christmas song. I checked the calendar, moved some things around and blocked out as much time as I could over the next two days to spend time in my home studio. With a smile on my face and love in my heart I offered a little prayer of thanks for the song I was about to write. I won’t say writing comes easy all the time, but this go around felt like it was meant to be and two days later I had things buttoned up!
So What Are You Waiting For?
What excuses do you have that stop you from doing what you love? During this holiday season as you give of yourself to others, try giving to yourself as well. Go to that museum to see the new exhibit you’ve had on your to-do-list. Go skating at the Boston Common Frog Pond. Reach out to your closest friends that live nearby and make plans to catch up. Be adventurous and take a weekday off from work and head up north to ski for a day. Be good to yourself and let us know in the comment section what you come up with!
I wish you and your loved ones hope, peace and happiness for the coming year. Oh, and if you’re curious to hear how the song came out . . . Silence of the Night
Would love to hear your thoughts,
most especially if you think it can help others!
Take what flows for you and let the rest float by.
